Alfons Merlijn - Father of Vincent Merlijn - Inspiration

My passion for flight was instilled in me from an early age, and it's all thanks to my Dad, who is an avid aviation enthusiast. I don't think I could have chosen any other path!

Alongside my love for aviation, I have also been drawn to the arts, and my talent for drawing and painting has given me a sense of accomplishment. My Dad played a significant role in this too. As a child, I was deeply impressed by my Dad's collection of static and flying models, and the fascinating airplane stories he shared with me at bedtime helped foster my love for aviation over the years. He even took me to the local airfields, taught me how to build my own Chuck gliders, and showed me how to locate thermals. Many of us can relate to this, but unfortunately, not all children have a father who shares the same passion for flight.

When I was eight, one of my teachers contacted my parents and informed them that all I did was draw "drops of water" in my books. Little did they know that I was actually sketching airfoils!

The journey began with a small business venture in a hobby room where free flight kits were crafted. Over time, these kits grew in complexity and transformed into a worldwide educational youth initiative known as the FAI Rookie project. As the project expanded, our humble abode was gradually overtaken by the kits, turning it into more of a hangar than a living space. Despite the chaos, my girlfriend and two children pitched in to help. As the project continued to flourish, even our nieces, nephews, their friends, and entire packing crews joined in to help us package and ship the Rookies.
